Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Aesthetics)
Blepharoplasty is the surgical correction of the eyelids for aesthetic and functional reasons.
Over time, aging, gravity and genetic factors can cause sagging skin, fat accumulation and bagging in the upper and lower eyelids.
This condition is both aesthetically uncomfortable and can make daily life difficult by narrowing the visual field.
Blepharoplasty is a common surgical procedure performed to eliminate these problems and give a younger, more dynamic facial expression.
Causes and Advantages of Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty, which is performed to correct the appearance of the eyelids and eliminate various problems, is a preferred treatment method in many cases:
- Upper Eyelid Sagging: Skin sagging occurs in the upper eyelid due to aging or genetic factors.
These sagging both affect the aesthetic appearance and, in advanced cases, narrow the visual field, making vision difficult. - Bagging in the Lower Eyelid: Fat accumulation and bagging in the lower eyelid make the person look tired and old.
- Wrinkles Around the Eyes: It is also possible to correct some wrinkles with blepharoplasty.
- Younger and More Vibrant Looks: Blepharoplasty gives the person’s facial expression a younger and more vibrant appearance.
Blepharoplasty can be performed not only for aesthetic concerns, but also to protect eye health and function.
Preparation Process Before Blepharoplasty
There are some important preparatory stages to be considered before blepharoplasty surgery:
- Doctor Examination: In the pre-operative consultation with your doctor, the problems with your eyelids and your expectations are evaluated.
In addition, your eye health, skin structure and general health status are reviewed. - Consultation and Planning: When performing eyelid aesthetics, a detailed planning is made to achieve a result that is compatible with other parts of the face.
- Medication Use: Blood thinners and supplements should be stopped a few weeks before surgery.
- Smoking and Alcohol: Quitting smoking and alcohol use in the preoperative period positively affects the healing process.
How is Blepharoplasty Performed?
Blepharoplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia or sedation and the procedure time usually varies between 1-2 hours.
It can be performed on the upper eyelid, lower eyelid or both.
Here are the main stages of the surgical process:
1. Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty
Excess skin, muscle and fatty tissue in the upper eyelid are removed to give the eyelid a more youthful and dynamic appearance.
Since the surgical incision is made along the natural eyelid line, the surgical scar is not evident.
2. Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty
Bags and excess fatty tissue in the lower eyelid are removed or repositioned with incisions made on the inside of the eyelid or near the lash line.
In this way, the lower eyelid gains a smoother and tauter appearance.
Recovery Process After Blepharoplasty
The recovery process after blepharoplasty surgery may vary from patient to patient.
However, it usually consists of the following steps:
- First Days Swelling and bruising may occur on the eyelids after surgery.
Applying cold compresses to the eyes for the first few days helps reduce swelling. - Removal of Stitches: Stitches are removed approximately 5-7 days after surgery.
It is recommended that the patient avoid applying excessive pressure on the eye area during the removal of the stitches. - Recovery Process: Swelling and bruises on the eyelids usually decrease within 1-2 weeks.
It may take 1-2 months for the full results to appear.
Risks and Side Effects of Blepharoplasty
As with any surgical procedure, blepharoplasty has some risks and side effects.
These include the following:
- Bleeding and infection.
- Temporary numbness or tenderness of the eyelids.
- Rarely occurring asymmetry and scarring.
It is very important to follow your doctor’s recommendations to minimize postoperative complications.
